Making Friends

I woke up with this thought one morning.

In English, we say that a person "makes friends." I think this implies that friendship isn’t something you simply stumble upon. A friendship is something that you work on to create and maintain.

I get really cool email messages via this website. I used to just let all of those conversations reach a natural end and that was it. But in the last five years or so, I’ve made more of an effort to ask questions and even re-kindle conversations as I think of other things weeks later. This has led to some really neat ongoing conversations with really neat people.

It’s taken me an embarrassingly long time to realize that I don’t have to just let friendship fall into my lap. I can take an active part in fostering it.
