Never forget to be weird!

I think the things that make us "weird" are the things that make us us. So being weird is being yourself. It’s the part that isn’t exactly like everyone else.

I’m amazed at how many people have at least one weird and cool hobby or interest once you get to know them.

I find doing weird stuff to be highly motivating!

If I’m dragging my feet on something, I find a huge motivator is to just say, "Screw it, I’m going to make this intentionally weird and funny." More often than not, I’ve not only amused myself with that thing, but it also turns out pretty great and I eventually end up finishing it and polishing it up. Sometimes the weird and funny thing is actually perfect just the way it is.

Other names for this are: "having fun" or "playing".

Really love this:

"Do the weirdest thing that feels right." It was so obvious, yet so elusive. Immediately, so much about my writing became clear. What I should focus on became obvious. I felt silly about ideas I had where I was playing dumb status games or "shoulding" myself. I started to draft the notes that would become this essay.

And this! This Crustacean Singles is perfect:

The head says

Ask your doctor if being weird is right for you.

Update for Summer 2024 (if you know, you know): I love weirdos. I’m a weirdo. It’s a badge of honor. Using "weird" as an insult is awesome because if you’re my kind of weirdo, you just grin and say, "yup," and pull your cloak back over your head. But if you’re not my kind of weirdo, you get angry and start sputtering and your brain short-circuits and you fall over and twitch in a ditch. It’s a completely self-selecting insult.
