How do we extract meaning from hyperlinks?

Created: 2022-03-19

First we have the idea that links are information. Then we ask how do we capture this information?

Finally, what can we do to make it easier to access this information?

Idea one: The most obvious way is to list the links within a document collection by their text descriptions. But I’m not sure how valuable that would be - interesting, yes, but insightful?

Idea two: Display "backlinks" on a given document to show the text of the incoming hyperlink from other documents which linked to it.

The zettelkasten.de article "Backlinking Is Not Very Useful — Often Even Harmful" argues against reflexively making backlinks:

Backlinks are a perfect example on how features of software not only can be useless but actively harming you work by redirecting your attention towards to the superficial belief that you need to place links, instead of trying to connect knowledge.

Idea three: Make "connection" documents containing nothing but connections between other documents. Arguably, these synthesis meta-documents would be whole views of information.
