Dave's Cheese Notes: Grand Cru
Back to Dave’s Cheese Pages.
Grand Cru is a product of Roth Cheese. Here’s the website and Grand Cru page:
Here it is:
If you ask "the internet" in 2026, you’ll be told that Grand Cru is a category of French cheese. But that’s because the internet, and possibly all of human knowledge from this point forward will be entirely bullshit. But at least it’s fast and voluminous bullshit. What amazing fucking progress!
I’m over here like a big dumb idiot trying to work with facts and do actual things. Crazy, right? What am I even thinking??? What a loser. I’m gonna be so left behind. Sigh. Sorry. I’m in a really grumpy mood lately.
Today’s existential crisis was brought to you by Roth Cheese!
"Cru" and "grand cru" are wine designations for high-quality vineyards:
A vineyard or group of vineyards in France, especially one having a high reputation. Borrowed from French cru (“growth”), from French crû, past participle of French croître (“grow”).
Grand cru is great growth. There’s also premier cru (first growth).
But let’s talk about this actual cheese.
The Roth description is:
…our signature alpine-style cheese. It’s made with the freshest milk in imported copper vats and aged 4+ months in our cellars. Robust and full-bodied, this one-of-a-kind cheese melts beautifully to become a cook’s everyday companion.
Copper cheese-making vats are pretty cool. Look 'em up!
It’s really interesting they mention melting it right there in the official description because that matches my conclusion perfectly: this cheese is great for melting on things.
On it’s own, this is a very mild "swiss" cheese with a hard-as-nails rind. It’s really hard to cut that rind off without taking a ton of "paste" with it. Paste. Good lord what an appetizing term. Who the heck came up with "paste" for the innards of a tasty cheese? Somebody who didn’t like cheese very much, I guess.
Rind and paste. Yum yum!
Sorry, I keep getting off track. Cheese. Cheese. Right, so this is not a mind-blowing snacking experience on its own.
So I found some stuff to melt it on. The best? Gluten-free corn dogs. You heard me right. This here grande crue elevated them 'dogs from county fair to county faire, you know what I mean? And they smelled amazing coming out of the oven (not being sarcastic).
Verdict: melt this cheese on something.
Until next time, stay sane, my cheesy friends!
