Week-month-year review for journaling
Page created: 2022-03-08 , updated: 2023-05-10This is my current journaling-reflection method as discussed in great detail in My Notebook System.
Update 2023: The weekly wrap-ups turned out to be too hard to keep up with. As soon as I missed one, they started to stack up like an old, rotten TODO list. Ironically, the monthly wrap-ups are no problem because I have a whole month to get to the previous month’s wrap-up before I’m "behind". We’ll see if I make it through a year…
The method is a distilling process where daily logs get summarized into weekly "wrap-ups" containing just the highlights of the week.
The weekly wrap-ups are further distilled into monthly wrap-ups.
Finally, the monthly wrap-ups will be distilled into an amazing yearly wrap-up.
It will surely lead to mind-blowing insights and maybe the ability to fly? I dunno.
Process
Now that I’m dong the wrap-ups monthly, I’m finding a split window in Vim to be highly effective. Since my log entries are in my vviki wiki system (which is also the authoring tool for the page you’re reading right now), it’s super efficient to jump between the daily log entries and the monthly wrap-up buffer with a handful of key presse.
Monthly wrap-ups can take as little as 15 minutes. Some months are more interesting and varied than others.
